Camiral Golf & Wellness wins the ‘International Environmental Golf Club of the Year’ award at the 2025 Golf Environment Awards (GEAs), administered by the STRI Group.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the GEAs honour outstanding individuals and golf courses for their dedication to environmental stewardship. Spain’s no. 1 golf resort* was commended for its impactful sustainability initiatives across nature conservation, resource management, and community engagement.
Tina Jessop, Head of Brand and Communications at the STRI Group, said: “Camiral Golf & Wellness exemplifies environmental leadership, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to preserving local ecosystems and integrating sustainability initiatives throughout its operations.”
“By eliminating more than 70,000 plastic bottles annually and generating its own renewable energy through an on-site power station and 316 solar panels, the resort is significantly reducing its carbon footprint, cutting over 362 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
“Working alongside expert biologists, Camiral has cultivated a diverse and interconnected landscape that provides shelter for native plant and animal species. Their vision of developing a thriving natural reserve, underpinned by a strong green infrastructure, firmly establishes them as pioneers in sustainable golf course management.”
Flavio Papa, Director of Golf at Camiral Golf & Wellness, expressed his pride in the resort’s recognition, “Winning this year’s ‘International Environmental Golf Club of the Year’ award is a testament to our long-standing commitment to sustainability. Over the past 25 years, we have led the way in responsible golf course management, including the use of 100% recycled water across our courses and wider estate.
“Most recently, we implemented a sustainability-focused turf upgrade to our Stadium Course, introducing Bermuda Celebration and Paspalum grass varieties. This change, along with broader water-saving measures, will reduce water consumption on our golf courses by 35% while minimising the need for chemical treatments on the fairways.”
“In addition, our investment in a new electric Club Car fleet, alongside other resort-wide environmental initiatives and community engagement efforts, continues to showcase our dedication to sustainability while enhancing the guest experience.”
This recognition reinforces the resort’s status as an industry leader and adds to a growing list of accolades attributed to the 36-hole venue. In 2013, Camiral Golf & Wellness became the first European Tour Destination to receive the GEO Certificate from the Golf Environment Organization. In 2020, it received the IAGTO Sustainability Award for Nature Protection in recognition of excellence in environmental and social responsibility.
In 2023, the World Top 100 resort was recognised as one of the Best Sustainable Golf Courses in Europe in a new ‘Green 100’ listing that identifies the most environmentally conscious and socially responsible golf courses in Europe.
